We Really Need Some Summertime Love!

Pretty much every DJ these days is having a crack at making a mashup. It's a way for a DJ to demonstrate their talent and ability, and their control of their equipment.
The issue that I have is that there are lots of mashups that are basically clones of each other, or simply that the same songs are being used over again, and that the resulting mashup shows no real inspiration. If the mashup doesn't grab me within the first few seconds, It's usually a case of, yep....., next!



I do like to follow certain mashup djs, such as Djs from Mars, Colatron, Lobsterdust, etc. But I really enjoy finding those hidden gems. When a DJ isn't well known, or changes their style or simply gets an idea one day over a coffee. I enjoy it when I hear something done differently.


The latest offering from the house of Colatron is 'Beginning Over' a subtle blend of Daniel Rosenfeld, Tycho and the wonderful Portishead. He classes this as a homage to death and rebirth, hinting at a course change for the entity of sound and light. No video for youtube, and there may not be one. Colatron is currently looking for inspiraton, possibly venturing into unfamiliar territory or even a complete change of style. His recent works have been very grown-up, professional, but with a dark, or sometimes melancholy edge, but always a work of genius with a hefty heartfelt emotion. These traits have earned him the respect of the mashup community internationally. His achievements and accomplishments are many and varied. Next for today, DJ Axcess. When thinking of time served mashup artists, one that will always spring to mind, is DJ Axcess, formerly known as DJ Mouse, real name Christian Gutsch of Germany





His mashups are, quite simply, an absolute pleasure to listen to. He conveys a professional clarity, a purity if you will, in his music, and if you go over to his website, you can listen to his tracks on the sites player.



What doesn't kill you makes you whistle (Kelly Clarkson vs. Flo-Rida) Mashup, found on the site and on soundcloud, is a perfect example. Very clear and precise, and totally flawless.



Hotel Radioactive (Eagles Vs. Imagine Dragons) is a beautiful example of how to mashup the eagles, very pleasant on the ears, and making the most of the tracks awesome guitars http://vimeo.com/91323999



The latest offering from the Axcess of Music is "California Wings" a new mashup featuring (Birdy vs. Rihanna)

I recently promoted LauraBmashups roaring applause, the Katy Perry mashup.



I've found another mashup of roar worth a mention, pop over to youtube or soundcloud for a listen to Candy Roar by cut and paste, where they have mashed Katy's roar track with Robbie Williams Candy. It's actually pretty good, what my mum would call a 'toetapper'



Someone who caught my attention very recently was Voicedude, who has recently released a couple of tracks.

Firstly we have 'Bossa Nova Nights - Elvis Presley Vs. F.U.N.' a mix of Elvis Presley - "Bossa Nova Baby" [Viva Elvis RMX] vs F.U.N. - "Some Nights"


This one works really well, I could imagine this one performed live or in an Elvis Movie.


The one I really want to give a mention to though is 'Laid Back Chainsmokers - Laid Back Vs. Chainsmokers + Sugarhill Gang Vs. Aloe Blacc'
I really don't like #Selfie by The Chainsmokers, I actually prefer Erase, which features the amazingly talented and beautiful Priyanka Chopra (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LG7i_rF2u34).
But Voicedude has come up with a brilliant mashup that blends #selfie with the Sugarhill Gang's Apache,
Aloe Blacc's Wake Me Up, and the Laid Back track White Horse, a track that has been sampled by the likes of Justin Timberlake and the Black-eyed-peas. I always remember the cross-eyed girl in the video. If anyone knows who she was, leave me a message on twitter, cheers!


Can't Remember To Forget The Nightventure (DJ Score Mashup) is a track from DJScore that I came across about a month ago.
I found this progressive house track after listening to the parody by the key of awesome and just went hunting. I'm a big fan of Shakira, love her voice, and of course she is incredibly beautiful, and so sexy.

I should make a mention here that I have finally managed to get Hot Velocity Cold Shift - MeadVice Combo onto youtube without any crap about copyright. Sherlock is Back, a new Dr Who, and Granville is back in the shop



Hello to all, hope you are very well indeed. Yes, Sherlock will be back on our screens very soon, we have a new Doctor and a Christmas special of 'Open All Hours' is to be made into a new series, Marvellous!


There seems to be some issue with the new Doctor, however. Firstly, we recently saw the BBC screening of 'The Day of the Doctor', the long awaited transition episode before the new Doctor (Peter Capaldi) takes up the mantle in the Christmas Special 'The Time of the Doctor'.


In The Day of the Doctor, we have Matt Smith and David Tennant interacting with John Hurt, who is the incarnation of the doctor who destroyed Galifray. I'm not going to get into the whole paradox theory of his eventual actions, just the fact that with the arrival of John Hurt throws a massive spanner in to Tardis engine.


In 'The Night of the Doctor' (mini epsode on YT) Paul McGann, classed as the 8th doctor, even though he only made one film, becomes John Hurt. This would make him the 9th doctor and Christopher Eccleston the 10th
If John Hurt destroyed Galifrey and the 1st Doctor (William Hartnell) was a result of this, it stands to reason that the John Hurt Doctor is a very early version, if not the very first and original Doctor.
Also, Paul McGann was commisioned to be the 8th doctor, but because the film didn't do well his series wasn't made, so where does Peter Cushing fit in the grand scheme of things? 
Also, some are counting David Tennant twice. Should they? 
Just something for your brain to chew over.



Sherlock is to return to BBC One on New Years Day, and I cannot wait. I think I may have sussed how he survived the fall, but unsure as to a few details, but he must have had help, maybe an ex client or the baker street irregulars.
Anyone who is familiar with the Conan-Doyle books, will have worked out straight away that he would be back, as the original tales have him luring Colonel Sebastian Moran in to a trap, the last of Moriarty's gang. I'm absolutely salivating at the thought of a new series, cannot wait!



And, at the distinguished age of 73, David Jason is to return as Granville in a Christmas Special of 'Open All Hours'. In the new one-off special, Granville now runs the shop, having inherited it from Arkwright and becomes the boss for the first time, as well as the return of characters including nurse Gladys Emmanuel (Lynda Baron), now herself in her twilight years.


I'm not one for tv, unless it's something really good, most of what I watch is online. But I would much rather just have my music playing in the background as I do something a bit more creative than watching the tube. I have a fondness for long mixes, such as DjPrincessAnn or Bobby Martini, a recent one I mentioned in a past post by Dj Morgoth (Mashupyourbootz) has become a favourite of mine. But there has been a bit of a long mix decline recently, but I'm glad to say that the dry spell maybe over.
There are two types of longmix. There is the 'get as many songs in as you can' style and then you have the 'take you on a journey' style. I'm not a big fan of the former, as they can be very busy, and sometimes aggressive to the ears, and you end up getting annoyed because you can't really keep up with the song. Every now and then, though, a good one comes along. An example of such a one is 'Pop World 2013 (A Mashup Of 60 Songs)' and can be found on youtube or facebook

One annoyance is the creation of the word 'Danthology', Oh don't get me fucking started. If we are going to use this word, then we have - Pop Danthology 2013 1 Hour HD, and yes it is on youtube, someone made a 1 hour video, well done for that, it is very well put together, as is the mix, but please be warned that there is an appearance from Justin Beiber #shudder#.
You will recognise the mashups in this mix, as it is a collection of various mashup artists.


If you fancy some modern house and euro beats, one I stumbled across
was - Best House Music 2013 Club Hits – quite a refreshing sharp beat to this one. I like to listen to A.S.O.T. so this one went down quite well.


So, mah bitches, if yooz is like, wantin sum beats for the noo yeer party, theres plenty out there.
Just remembered, I also found a David Guetta Mix, comes in at about an hour. I've not listened to it yet, but it's David Guetta, c'mon!


Over on Vimeo, I have found Ithaca Audio, and a little beauty by them, well a couple actually. Rolling in the beats (live mashup) - 24 Video APC40 Mashup created by Chris from Ithaca Audio, based in Brighton, East Sussex, and they are responsible for the very clever video for Mercedes (Mercedes-Benz - Sound With Power) availibe for download on soundcloud and vimeo.


The second track of theirs I want to highlight is the mashup - Game Theory
I really love the video to this, and the quirky but addictive track really gets stuck in your noggin.


 Don't hold back, just push things forward very powerful mix of star wars, shaft and obviously 'dont hold back. Brilliant

and lastly - The Mixtape – Celebrating 50 years of the cassette tape with another innovative video and a beautifully put together track, with the wonderful Etta James starting proceedings, but with a beat build up reminisant of the Djs from Mars early tracks.


I don't normally get seasonal, but I went looking for xmas tracks that have been remixed or updated, and have some little beauties.

New! Mix Dubstep Christmas 2012 - Xmas Dubstep 2012

This one is actually from last year, but I've only just come across it. The reason being, I usually look for this kind of thing, only to find that there an absolute abundance of it, and it's usually shyte, but this one really impressed the hell out of me, mainly by the amount of work that must have gone into it, and the end result is really good, it all works really well.

This one is fantastic, not over done, everything works well together, and the original track isn't harmed, is anything, it's better. You may or maynot agree, but I love this mix

Where has all the Sunshine Gone?


Well summer has come and gone, and the weather has been pretty good, considering it's been a bit schizophrenic at times. Got caught in a couple of sudden downpours, one was while it was still blazing sunshine. Quite an odd sensation, enjoyable even.
I personally have been listening to a lot of trance over the past few month's, mainly because the mashup scene has produced virtually nothing that has really blown me away. There is an abundance of plagiarized copies on Youtube, but a serious lack of inspirational works of genius.
I have been back to the places where I first discovered the mashup scene, and, of course the first place I stopped off was my old mate Andy Smart (A.K.A. Colatron). Those of you who have graced this site with your wonderful presence before will have read my post about Andy's shining example of mashup artistry, E.V.P. (Electronic Voice Phenomenon)

Pretty much everything that Colatron does is a work of art, and I'm yet to hear him produce anything that is less than perfection. I have listened to his stuff recently and he is producing some absolutely beautiful pieces of music, yet nothing upbeat and no dance tracks. One track that caught my attention was The Good and a Comfortable Life, a welcoming, and somewhat personal look into his world, and the invitation is gratefully received. The video is simplistic and beautiful, and the track itself is well worth a listen.


After having my fill at the fountain of Colatron, I decided to ghost over the DJs from Mars website. I often visit their youtube channel, but rarely get over to the website. I received an email recently, as I'm sure most of you already know, the boxheaded one's have left Italy and now have residency at the Hard Rock hotel and casino in Las Vegas:

How absolutely lovely for them, but what about the rest of us? Well, fear ye not, for these hard working martian boys are still producing for their youtube channel, and their stuff is out of this world, but the last thing they brought out of which caught my ear was four or five months ago which was ' Eminem vs The Prodigy vs TJR vs Baauer vs Nero – Ode to Harlem Bitch Up Without Etude' . I really liked this one, showed intelligence, creativity and an ability to take a track (eminem) that has been absolutely mashup to shit by every mashup artist and wannabe dj on the planet, and still come up with something new and refreshing to the senses. A lot of people didn't like this one, but I thought it was brilliant.

I visited a lot of other sites, and most of them have nothing new, with the last offerings being from over a year ago. DJ Princess Ann (Kuala Lumpur) has been touring solid for over a year, with very little on her sites. Bobby Martini's site hasn't had a listing since 2009, and the last thing that DJ Lobsterdust did that was any good was Dec 2012 (Michael Jackson+Rihanna+J-Lo+Owl City+Carly Rae Jepsen - We Found A Good Beat)

Talking of Youtube, the spawn of the demons womb, What's with all the fucking adverts? I spend so much time clearing the screen that I miss most of the video, and it's pissing me off, so pack it the fuck in Youtube. Honestly, I was watch one of Stuart Ashens reviews, and had to restart it twice. Was watching a new channel, Emma Blackery, had been recommended as really funny, and had the same problem on a couple of her videos. By the way, she has just released a song, video on demon spawn, sorry youtube. Give it a watch cause she's gorgeous and a redhead, and she's got a lovely voice.

Soon be Easter - Don't Eat the Eggs!



I would like to show recognition of the superb work of a mashup artist that I have been following for some time now. She goes by the name Laura B Deejay, not to be confused with DJ Laura B, and she can be found at Laura B Mashup on YT.

This is a flawless and brilliant mashup, It's awesome. A mashup of BIGBANG's Fantastic Baby and PSY Gangnam Style. BIGBANG are a south korean boy band who formed in 2006.

Excellent flow with a great beat, and the unmistakable sound of Dorothy Sherman belting out about a third of the way through with 'Can't stop me now'.

Someone else I have been following on YT is a group of people making the best parodies I've seen in a long time. Very professionally done, beautiful attention to detail, and very, very funny. I'm talking about 'The Key of Awesome', found on YT's Barely Political channel.

They report to making two videos a week, usually a parody and accompanying videos of the actors and behind the scenes. Everyone involved is an accomplished actor in their own right and physical and vocal resemblance is sometimes pretty amazing. They have their own website at

The gorgeous Andrea Feczko plays the part of Kesha in the parodies. Not being a big fan of Kesha, probably because she looks like a smelly mare who doesn't wash very often, I was surprised to find that I wasn't the only one who felt this way, as the parodies of Kesha seem to theme around the fact that she is a smelly mare who doesn't wash very often. How she finds the time for this I don't know, as she is a very busy girl
as a Host/Presenter/wirter for MTV, PrimeTV & UMFTV, to name but a few.

Barely Political and The Key of Awesome are the brainchild of the two two main members of the show Ben Relles and Mark Douglas in 2009. Stop Giving The Banks Money!!!!

I'd better make it up to you then, with some absolutely stonking mashups that I've found on my cybertravels.

Lets start by answering a question that I was recently asked. There seems to be some debate as to whether you can get on to iTunes without a credit card number. Answer, yes you  can!
The question was raised over the State of Trance Invasion World Tour and the podcasts surrounding them. Podcasts are Free, podcasts on iTunes are Free, but to download them you need an account. Install iTunes, look for a free app and it will ask you to make an account, because you have chosen a free app the option to set up a free account is now availible. Now to Business!
Everyone has been banging on about a mashup doing the rounds of Payphone/Call me maybe, but it seems they are talking about the youtube listing for IM5 - "Call Me Maybe/Payphone (Mashup)" . Firstly this isn't a mashup, it's a bunch of pre-pubescent numbnuts trying to be youtube superstars instead of getting a real job when their collective balls decide to drop, and frankly, it makes my teeth itch.

So I went looking for an actual Call Me Maybe/Payphone mashup, and if you look on SoundCloud, you will find some damn good efforts, (but don't bother with the covers).

The two call me maybe mashups that really floated my boat, were these babies.

This one works really well, and I really like the video too.

Emeli Sande is having pretty successful time at the moment, and there are a quite a few mashups doing the circuit of her current track My Kind Of Love, an absolutely beautiful song. The two that have caught my attention are the Sonatron Mix and the Wideboys Mix, they are both punchy with a great beat, but haven't been overdone and don't deflect from the original track

Boomshakala and all is well with the world

Since my last posting I have managed to calm down a bit. I managed to get a bit hot under the collar about not being able to go on youtube. Well I suppose YT were only doing there job, and copyright is an issue, but come on, lets play the game fairly. When a DJ mashes or remixes two or more songs, and comes up with a masterpiece, credit should be given when due. The internet was original founded on the bases of free speech and interpretation. Even though every part of the web is being commercialised for profitable gain, free speech and interpretation is still a right. Mashups are a form of creativity and expression, and deserve the artistic license as any other art form.
In august of 2010, I wrote a piece on E.V.P. by Colatron. Colatron is the alter ego of my good mate Andy Smart, a truly talented, gifted and succesful artist. If the powers that be had jumped on him, we would never have heard this wonderous track. What would have happened if they had done the same to Queen when they released Bohemian Rhapsody. Creativity should be nutured. Cradled like a babe in arms, not become a victim of bureaucracy and taken down at every turn.
